AIFIS-CAORC Research Fellowships are designed to support graduate and post-graduate researchers who are US citizens and wish to pursue their research activities in Indonesia. We are offering a grant of US$6,000 for each scholar to conduct research projects in any field of contemporary and traditional Indonesian Studies. The application deadline has been extended until January 5, 2024.
Applications Open for AIFIS Overseas Faculty Development Seminar in Indonesia, Summer 2025
AIFIS is excited to partner with the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC) to offer an Overseas Faculty Development Seminar (OFDS) in Indonesia in the summer of 2025. The OFDS programs are fully-funded overseas seminars that help faculty and administrators at US community colleges and minority-serving institutions gain international experience with the aim of developing and improving international courses, curricula, and teaching materials at their home institutions. AIFIS will lead the Indonesia-based seminar from July 11-25, 2025, on the theme of "Cultural Currents: Education and Society in the Indo-Pacific Region." The call for applications is currently open through December 2, 2024.

Congratulations to Mr. Yosef Djakababa, PhD (AIFIS In-Country Representative and Assistant Professor in the International Relations Study Program, Faculty Of Political and Social Sciences, Universitas Pelita Harapan, Indonesia) for the publication of his book review on Mattias Fibiger’s book, “Suharto's Cold War: Indonesia, Southeast Asia, and the World" in the South East Asia Research Journal, SOAS-UK. Learning Qur’anic Arabic in a virtual village: Family religious language policy in transnational Indonesian Muslim families
Congratulations to Artanti Sari, PhD (English Literature Program, Universitas Bina Darma), and her co-author for the publication of their latest paper in The International Journal of Bilingualism on June 13, 2024. The paper titled, "Learning Qur’anic Arabic in a virtual village: Family religious language policy in transnational Indonesian Muslim families"
Artanti Sari is a lecturer at Universitas Bina Darma, Palembang, she was one of the selected participants for the AIFIS 2022 Academic Writing Workshop. In that workshop she had an opportunity to work with a U.S. mentor in a one-on-one mentorship program organized by AIFIS. Ms. Artanti Sari mentor in this program was Prof. Nancy Smith-Hefner (Professor and Chair of Anthropology Department at Boston University).

Gamelan Tunas Mekar with "Padayon" FACC Cultural Performance Group
For the third year in a row, Gamelan Tunas Mekar will headline a performance as part of Levitt Pavilion Denver's Free Concert Series. On Sunday, September 22, 2024, Gamelan Tunas Mekar will partner with the Filipino-American Community of Colorado to present a performance of music and dance from Southeast Asia.
This performance is a part of Levitt Pavilion Denver's Free Concert Series: all free series shows are all-ages and they vet and book artists based on artistic merit. For our third time participating in the free concert series, we hope to curate a show and experience that highlights Southeast Asian performance and the arts in the Denver metro area. As part of this event, our intention is to partner with Balinese dancers here in the US, and to bring them to Colorado to perform on Levitt's open-air stage with our ensemble.
This performance will take place on September 22, 2024 at Levitt Pavilion Denver.

MoU Signing Ceremony between AIFIS-William & Mary Law School and Faculty of Law Universitas Bengkulu
MOU signing ceremony between AIFIS and Faculty of Law Universitas Bengkulu. The MOU is to facilitate collaboration in research, training, publication, and dissemination of research on topics related to the development of Indonesian law. The partnership begins with AIFIS co-sponsored event, a public lecture by Prof. Christie Warren, the Director of the Center for Comparative Legal Studies and Post-Conflict Peacebuilding at William & Mary Law School comparative constitutional law on the topic: "Abusive judicial power in America and Indonesia." During the same event, Universitas Bengkulu Faculty of Law and William & Mary University Law School signed an MOU to expand the partnership and collaboration between the two institutions.
