The 7th International Symposium of Journal Antropologi Indonesia

Between July 23-26, 2019, AIFIS helped sponsor the 7th International Symposium of the Journal Anthropologi Indonesia (ISJAI). The title of the conference this year was “The Use and Abuse of Diversity : Anthropological Responses to the Threat of Disintegration.” ISJAI is the biggest and well-known international conference of anthropology in Indonesia. It is an event initiated and hosted by Jurnal Antropologi Indonesia, a journal published by Department of Anthropology, Universitas Indonesia since 1969 (formerly name Berita Antropologi, 1969-1989).

In his conference address, Dr. Dave Lumenta representing Jurnal Antropologi Indonesia explained that 2019 is an important marker in the development of Indonesian social and political history. The symposium included a number of prominent speakers from around the world, including Webb Keane, Ph.D. from the University of Michigan; Anna Tsing, Ph.D. from the University of California Santa Cruz; Irwan Abdullah, Ph.D. from Universitas Gadjah Mada; Nurul Ilmi Idrus, Ph.D. from Universitas Hasanuddin; and Syed Farid Alatas, Ph.D. from National University of Singapore.
