Symposium - Bali and Beyond

Organized in conjunction with the exhibition Fabricating Power with Balinese Textiles, this symposium expands upon themes of religion, power, and cultural resilience to include textiles from various parts of the Indonesian archipelago. Speakers include anthropologists, textile historians, and curators each of whom will offer reflections on the agency of Indonesian textiles ranging from their spiritual or ritual uses in their culture of origin to their re-contextualization in Western ethnographic and art museums.

Call For Papers: ISEAS Conference on "Religious Authority in Indonesian Islam"

Objectives

  1. To study conventional accounts of traditional structures and figures of Islamic religious authority.
  2. To understand the underlying forces that shape and animate the construction, contestation, fragmentation, and pluralization of authority in contemporary Indonesian Muslim society.
  3. To analyze the role and influence of democracy, globalization, new media in the contestation and pluralization of religious authority. The proliferation and establishment of private television channels and new forms of information and communication technologies like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube would be one of the main focuses.
  4. To examine efforts to politicize religious authority in Indonesia for disparate political objectives.
  5. To identify diverse trends of religious authority in Indonesian Islam and to speculate on the future of mainstream organizations, particularly the NU and Muhammadiyah.

Democracy and Political Development in Asia

2018 marks the 150th anniversary of Japan’s Meiji Restoration, an important period in Japanese history  credited for ushering in an era of major political and social change. The subsequent transformation during the Meiji period resulted in Japan’s modernization and democratic transition.  This program will discuss political transitions in Indonesia and Myanmar, each of which face crucial challenges in shaping the future of their democratic practices. Through examining democratic transitions, the panel of experts will address issues related to interaction between democracies and authoritarian regimes that continue to influence the future of the region.
