Characteristics and Origins of Jazz as Viewed by a Beginning Gamelan Player

BACKGROUND

Jazz quickly spread across the world shortly after it first appeared in New Orleans at the start of the twentieth century. This talk will describe characteristics of jazz as viewed from the perspective of a beginning gamelan player. After describing the origins of jazz in New Orleans, the presentation will then explore how jazz changed as New Orleans musicians moved to northern cities like Chicago.
