Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowships

The Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowship Program provides opportunities to doctoral candidates to engage in full-time dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies. The program is designed to deepen research knowledge and increase the study of modern foreign languages, cultural engagement, and area studies not generally included in U.S. curricula. 

 Program Features:  

The institutional project period is 18 months. Students may request funding for a period of no less than six months and no more than 12 months. Funds support travel expenses to and from the residence of the fellow and the country or countries of research; maintenance and dependent allowances based on the location of research for the fellow and his or her dependent(s); an allowance for research related expenses overseas; and health and accident insurance premiums. Projects may focus on one or more of the following geographic areas: Africa, East Asia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, South Asia, the Near East, Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia, and the Western Hemisphere (excluding the United States and its territories).

Eligible Applicants:
Institutions of higher education (IHEs) in the United States are eligible to apply for grants under this program. As part of the application process, students submit individual applications to the IHE. The IHE then submits all eligible individual student applications with its grant application to the U.S. Department of Education. A student is eligible to receive a DDRA fellowship from their IHE if he or she:

  • is a citizen, national, or permanent resident of the United States;
  • is a graduate student in good standing at an IHE;
  • is admitted to candidacy in a doctoral degree program in modern foreign languages and area studies at that institution when the fellowship period begins;
  • is planning a teaching career in the United States upon completion of his or her doctoral program; or
  • possesses sufficient foreign language skills to carry out the dissertation research project.

FY 2018 LRC Program Competition

The International and Foreign Language Education (IFLE) office at the U.S. Department of Education is pleased to announce the opening of the competition for the fiscal year (FY) 2018 Title VI Language Resource Centers (LRC) Program.

The LRC Program provides grants to institutions of higher education (IHEs) or consortia of IHEs for establishing, strengthening, and operating centers that serve as resources for improving the nation's capacity for teaching and learning foreign languages. Funded centers provide teacher training and conduct research, materials development, assessment, and dissemination projects.

The FY 2018 LRC application package is now available at www.grants.gov. The deadline for submitting applications is June 25, 2018. 

IFLE expects to make 16 new awards totaling $2,746,768 under the FY 2018 LRC competition.

General Information: LRC Program

The LRC program provides funding to institutions of higher education in the United States for establishing, strengthening, and operating centers that serve as resources for improving the nation’s capacity for teaching and learning foreign languages. LRC activities include effective dissemination efforts, whenever appropriate, and may include

  • research and dissemination of new and improved teaching methods, including educational technology;
  • development and dissemination of new teaching materials;
  • development, application, and dissemination of performance testing;
  • training of teachers in the administration and interpretation of performance tests, the use of effective teaching strategies, and the use of new technologies;
  • significant focus on the needs of those who are teaching and learning the less commonly taught languages;
  • development and dissemination of materials designed to serve as a resource for foreign language teachers at the elementary school and secondary school levels; and
  • operation of intensive summer language institutes.

CSEAS Kyoto Fellowship

Kyoto University

Since 1975, CSEAS has had an established and highly appraised visiting scholarship program to promote research activities in and on the region by distinguished scholars. To date, over 350 – many of them leading researchers in their respective fields- have availed themselves of the Center’s considerable scholarly resources to engage in path breaking, multidisciplinary research and develop comparative, historical, and global perspectives on Southeast Asia.  CSEAS hosts scholars and researchers who work on comparative and regional issues from a multi-area perspective, and are interested in spending time in Kyoto, Japan to conduct research, write, or pursue other scholarly interests in connection with their field of study. With considerable scholarly resources, CSEAS also offers the invigorating atmosphere of scenic Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan and the main repository of the country’s cultural treasures, to enable researchers to pursue their interests in Southeast Asian area studies. The Center’s multi-disciplinary character and the diverse research interests of our faculty offer visiting research scholars an ideal opportunity for the exchange of ideas, collaboration, and the cultivation of comparative perspectives.  Fourteen fellowships are awarded annually on a competitive basis. Fellowships are normally between a period of three to six-months, although in exceptional cases they can be extended for an additional six months. Applicants are not limited to scholars: CSEAS has hosted government officials, journalists, public intellectuals, librarians, NGO workers, IT specialists, writers, artists, and other professionals on short-term visits.

Call for Proposals: NYSEAN Partners Fund

Proposals should be submitted to coordinator@nysean.org by June 15, 2018.

The mission of the New York Southeast Asia Network (NYSEAN) is to promote research on, and awareness of, Southeast Asia.  Toward that end, NYSEAN has established the Partners Fund to foster collaboration among academics, artists, policymakers and other professionals working on contemporary Southeast Asia.  To promote such cooperation, the NYSEAN Partners Fund is issuing a call for proposals aimed at funding conferences, small workshops, panel discussions, exhibitions, art installations or performances that address historical or contemporary issues in Southeast Asia and/or U.S.-Southeast Asia relations.

Where possible, proposals should relate to specific outcomes including academic or journalistic publications, media commentaries, podcasts, videos or appropriate artistic outputs. Applicants must be members of NYSEAN, and should be affiliated with a formal partner of NYSEAN listed on the NYSEAN website.  Proposals should be in the $3,000 to $12,000 range.  Events should be held during the fall semester of 2018, and all expenses should be incurred by December 31, 2018.

Recipients of must submit a narrative report on the outcome of their program within 30 days of the event.  The narrative report should include the following: a description of the event; a record of the number of participants/attendees; a plan for the dissemination of the knowledge produced by the event; a budget reconciliation; and an assessment of how the event helped advance NYSEAN’s mission.

International Conference on Business and Human Rights: Holding Governments Accountable in Asia

The International Conference on Business & Human Rights: Holding Governments Accountable in Asia will focus on the role of governments in protecting human rights from the impacts of business operations in Asia, under Pillar 1 of the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights. Participants will include academics, researchers, practitioners and members of civil society, from Southeast Asia and around the world. Full details on themes and objectives can be found at the event website and Facebook event page, and I have attached the conference poster to this email as a PDF. After the conference, selected good-quality papers will feature in a book to be published by a reputable international publisher.

Resilience In Resolution: How The Indonesian Economy Withstood The Financial Crisis

Please join NYU ISA and Permias NYC in welcoming Dr. Halim Alamsyah, Chairman of the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation (ICDC), former Deputy Governor of The Central Bank of Indonesia and former Commissioner of Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (FSA). 

He will be speaking about how the Indonesian economic infrastructures maintained resilience amidst the Asian financial crisis, as well as how it has continued to improve since. In addition to that, Dr. Alamsyah will provide an outlook of the current developments, challenges, and opportunities within the Indonesian economy.
